The Brawny® symbol of resiliency is really about standing up to life’s challenges, and coming out stronger on the other side.
Nothing breaks my heart more than to see people begging for money or food. That awkward glance at the off ramp, that pang of guilt, that feeling of wanting to do something compassionate to help, but not knowing what to do. I have vowed long ago not to give money, just to insure it doesn’t go to feeding an addiction. But I do want to help when I can. This is where Blessing Bags come in. I’ve started to put together and carry a few Blessing Bags for Women in my car to hand out when it’s appropriate.
Blessing Bags for Women
These simple products may not seem like a big deal to you or I, but to someone with limited resources, it could be worth more than gold.
I can’t imagine not having hygiene products when I need them, not to mention feminine hygiene products. I can’t imagine not having any detergent to wash my clothing. I can’t imagine what it would like to struggle to keep my feet dry, clean and warm. Just having what we consider the basics is anything but basic. It’s the difference between having no hope, to feeling that someone may actually care.
What to put in Blessing Bags for Women
- Toothpaste and toothbrush
- Laundry detergent

Save all those travel size samples from hotel rooms, those are perfect for blessing bags.
My Unsung Hero
I have a friend that I’ve mentioned before. My friend Shelly started showing up to feed the homeless every Saturday afternoon in downtown Vancouver Washington about a year ago. It started as a very small group, serving up hot soup and sandwiches. In one year, it has grown to a large group and serving up much more than just hot soup and sandwiches. Shelly brings school supplies, arranges for free hair cuts, clean clothing and has recently started advocating for a women’s shelter in our area. She’s given the homeless a voice. She’s made our community really take a look at the homeless problem and is pushing for change. Shelly is my Unsung hero!
When Brawny® Paper Towels asked me to share who my Unsung Hero was, I instantly thought of Shelly! She is resilient and stand ups to life’s challenges, just as Brawny® Paper Towels do for their everyday challenges. We need more people like Shelly. Just like Brawny, she’s resilient and capable of handling some of the toughest messes encountered. She is handling the often messy bureaucracy that comes with change.
The Brawny® symbol of resiliency is really about standing up to life’s challenges, and coming out stronger on the other side.
It’s the Little Things that Help!
I’ve created a small bag of blessing bags along with Brawny® Paper Towels to donate to Shelly. It’s not a lot, but it’s something and I know both will come in handy.
If you’re in the Vancouver Washington area, head down to Esther Short Park on Saturday afternoons around 4pm if you’d like to help out.
