Nothing says fall like a homemade Crockpot Apple Butter Recipe! We have a couple of apple trees that are loaded with organic apples, so I am always looking for ways to use up as many apples as I can. They’re not the prettiest apples, but they are perfect for peeling and cutting up to make applesauce or apple butter. Crockpots and slow cookers are perfect for your fall bounty! Last week I made the most delicious Crock pot homemade tomato sauce for Slow Cooker Sunday.
Another must-make recipe every fall is my delicious Apple Cream Cheese Bread. That stuff is good! Then if you spread a little apple butter on it too…….it makes you want to take the whole loaf and find a hiding place to eat it up!
Crockpot Apple Butter Recipe
I’m learning that not everyone grew up with Apple Butter. My husband didn’t even know what it was.
Apple Butter is basically just like making applesauce, except you let it cook down longer to a thicker substance, so it’s spreadable. I use a lot of the same ingredients in my apple butter recipe as I do for applesauce. We use apple butter on pancakes, toast, and ice cream. Simple to make, delicious to eat! That’s how I like it.
Can you Can or Freeze Apple Butter?
We usually eat it up right away, so there’s no need to can or freeze it. But if you find yourself making more than you think you can use, then yes, you are able to can or freeze. I’d probably use specific freezer containers and of course use safe canning methods to prevent harmful bacteria.
How to Make Slow Cooker Apple Butter
- Apples- enough to fill your slow cooker 3/4 up (I used about 6 medium apples)
- 2 1/2 – 3 cups Sugar – or 1 cup honey
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp allspice
- 1/2 cloves (not whole)
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- dash of salt
- 1/2 to 3/4 Cup water
After peeling, coring and slicing your apples, fill your crockpot until it’s 3/4 full. Add all the rest of your ingredients and stir until well blended. Cover and cook on LOW overnight. I cooked mine for about 24 hours, taking the lid off for the last few hours to help thicken. Store in the refrigerator up to 6 weeks, or freeze for longer storage. Or give it away!

Notes
This can be also made on the stovetop. Use a large dutch oven and cover. You'll be able to shorten the time it takes, just keep an eye on it and add water as needed.
Stove Top Apple Butter
If you’d rather make this on the stovetop, use a very large dutch oven or pot. Start by covering to create more moisture. Once the apple mixture starts to boil, cook on low and simmer settings.
