I think these are such a pretty gift, too. Gosh, and who doesn’t love a big ol’ jar of cocoa to get them through the cold winter nights, right?
Spicy Mexican Hot Cocoa Mason Jar Gift
Ingredients
- -1 cup dry milk (sometimes called powdered milk)
- - 1 cup unsweetened cocoa
- - 1 cup sugar
- - 1 heaping tablespoon cinnamon
- - 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- - 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
- - pinch of Cayenne pepper
- - 1 bag Hershey's Cinnamon Chips
- - 1 bag chocolate mini morsels
- - mini marshmallows.
Instructions
- Combine first seven ingredients (through Cayenne) in a large bowl and mix well. Fill quart-size mason jars 2/3 full of cocoa mix. Top with chocolate mini morsels, cinnamon chips, and marshmallows. Pack ingredients as tightly as you can, so ingredients do not shift (it's all about the presentation, right?).
- Write the instructions for your recipient on a tag you attach to the gift (I have the coordinating lined mason jar tagson my site if you'd like to use them):
- Instructions: Add two heaping tablespoons of dry mix to the bottom of a large mug. Fill with boiling water and mix. Top with mini chocolate chips, cinnamon chips, and marshmallows. Let cool a bit and ENJOY! (You may also want to let your recipient know that this cocoa has a kick!)
Lily says
Are the cinnamon chips optional?
Kim says
Hi Lily, I’m sure it would turn out just as delicous. Go for it.
Dana says
Has anyone used instant milk instead of powdered milk for this? Thoughts?
Kim says
Hi Dana, I believe they are the same in regards to this recipe.
Beverly says
If the chips and marshmallows are on top of the dry mix how do you measure out two tablespoons of the mix to make the cocoa?
Kim says
Just dig in!
Liz says
SO fun! I’d love to get this as a holiday gift!!!
Angie W. says
I think I may attempt to make these in the green Ball pint jars I bought for little office gifts. 🙂
Kim says
That sounds perfect!
Sylvie says
Such a fun gift idea, love the spicy kick!
Kim says
I do too!

I was reading the instructions for your hot chocolate labels and realized I didn’t include the toppings on mine. I’m doing a similar gift with smaller milk bottle style jars I found at Target. I was only planning to include marshmallows but may throw some chocolate chips in for another layer. I really like how yours looks. If I do this again next year I’m going to try a little harder to find a better recipe for mine. I took the shortcut this year and I’m using premade mix.
Kim says
I’m sure yours till be well received! Happy Holidays.
